Review, Swatches, Comparison | Clarins Milky Boost Capsules in shade 03

The Clarins Milky Boost foundations review post is one of my most read posts on this blog. So when Clarins decided to add another foundation to this line, I needed to try it, to satisfy my own curiosity and to give the unique perspective of comparing the three versions: the original Milky Boost, the Milky Boost Cream and the Milky Boost Capsules.

I purchased the capsules in shade 03, since I’ve tried the other foundations from the line in shade 02 and found them to be a bit too light, even for my skintone. Each capsule is more than enough for my face – I would say the ideal amount for me would be about 2/3 of what the capsule contains – but I can’t really save the last third for another time, since there is no way to seal the product back again. I can’t extend the durability of this product beyond the 30 individual uses it contains. If you are someone that likes to bring the foundation really down their neck and cover the ears, the one capsule amount might be ideal. I don’t think anyone would need to open two capsules for one use.

The capsules are easy to open, you just squeeze and twist the little top knob and it breaks fairly easily. I tried applying it with my fingers and with a dense brush – works well both ways, but I prefer using my fingers. Product gets on them anyway when you open the capsule, and it ends up looking more natural and less streaky than with a brush. But I also liked that the brush didn’t soak up a lot of product, so if your prefer not to get your fingers dirty, that’s a nice, viable way of application.

The foundation itself is very lightweight, feels like nothing on the skin, and even though it has a luminous finish, it dries down pretty quickly and it’s not sticky to the touch. Like a dry oil. I didn’t even feel the need to powder it – of course when I did, the foundation lasted longer. Coverage is light, but still enough to even out the skin tone if you have some blemishes. Below there is a photo of my skin before and after application.

Longevity wise, it was surprisingly good. I tested it first without primer, and without powder or setting spray: after four hours, a bit of oil comes through the nose, but the foundation is still very much intact. After eight hours, it was very faded on the chin and starting to break on the nose. It also gathered on the sides of the nostrils. It remained like that for up to the ten hours of testing, with a bit of creasing on my one forehead wrinkle at the 10th hour. My skin was getting a bit dry after that whole time though, which I didn’t feel with the other Milk Boost foundations.

With primer, powder and setting spray, after 10,5 hours, I had almost no foundation on the nose, but still some on my chin. I had no creasing on my forehead, and yes, skin was looking less fresh, but the foundation was still hanging on. It was also much better looking on the sides of my nostrils – not remotely as cakey as when I didn’t set it.

Comparison of Milky Boost Capsules with Milky Boost and Milky Boost Cream

Milky Boost Capsules are my favourite of the three. Better coverage, even though it’s still light. It’s also the least transferable of the three, least streaky of the three, and the easiest to make look natural. The only thing is that the capsules are the least hydrating. The Milky Boost Cream remains the most moisturizing of the three.

All have the same melon scent. The Clarins Milky Boost Capsules comes packaged in a small glass container with 30 capsules of 0,2 ml of foundation, which adds up to a total of 6 ml of foundation. That is a very small amount compared to an average foundation bottle (typically 30 ml) and even more so compared to the other offerings of this line – the original Milky Boost contains 50 ml, and the Milky Boost Cream contains 45 ml. The Milky Boost Capsules, however, are the only one I might consider repurchasing. In case you want to do so, they sell just the capsules to refill the jar with, and that saves you a little bit of money, beyond being better for the environment.

Final Thoughts

Sir husband complemented my skin multiple times with this foundation – certainly a lot more than with either of the other two Milky Boost foundations. I’m sceptical to recommend it due to the price – you really only get 30 uses out if it and the price per use get’s very high that way – but it’s one of the best light coverage foundations I’ve tried recently. Although I enjoy using it, I personally am thorn about if I’m going to repurchase or not. But it’s a good one, certainly.

If you are considering any of the Milky Boost foundations, the capsules are definitely the way to go.
