Review | Glow Recipe Avocado Melt Retinol Eye Sleeping Mask

Glow Recipe Avocado Eye Mask Review

Glow Recipe has been quite popular in the last few years, hasn’t it? I have tried some things from their Watermelon line but that one was so trendy and talked about that I felt my reviews wouldn’t add that much to what was already said about it. The Avocado line, on the other hand, could use more attention.

The Avocado Melt Retinol Eye Sleeping Mask is supposed to be an overnight mask that you can use as a day treatment as well (as long as you wear SPF) – so basically, it’s a heavy moisturizer, and I use it all over the face. I’ve said before, eye creams are glorified moisturizers, there’s nothing you can put on the eye area that you can’t on the rest of the face yadda yadda – basically any eye cream/serum/treatment that falls onto my hands will be used all over the face.

The texture is a firm paste that ends up being quite fluid and easy to spread. On the skin it feels thick but not greasy nor too occlusive. I like it for when my skin is dry and patchy but I can’t use it too many days in a row because my pores get clogged up. This has, as the name suggests, avocado oil in it, which is a great ingredient overall and fantastic for dry skin, but it can be comedogenic.

Despite having retinol in it, my skin does not get red or sensitive with heavy use. I’m assuming the percentage of retinol is quite low, since this is targeted for dry skin and retinol can be quite drying. There are a lot of good ingredients in this formula: shea butter and squalane (moisturizing), aloe vera(soothing), niacinamide (great for everything), hyaluronic acid (hydrating), and a good amount of antioxidants. And obviously, retinol – the best wrinkle reverser out there. It’s a great ingredients list, so much so that I’m choosing to ignore the only bad component (parfum) because not only is it so far down the list but with so many soothing and skin replenishing ingredients I doubt that it’s present at a high enough concentration to cause any irritation.

Glow Recipe Avocado Melt Retinol Eye Sleeping Mask Ingredients: Aqua, Glycerin, Propanediol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Persea Gratissima Oil, C9-12 Alkane, Stearic Acid, Butyrospermum Parkii Butter, Kaolin, Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Persea Gratissima Fruit Extract, Squalane, Niacinamide, Malachite Extract, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hexylresorcinol, Oryza Sativa Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Coffea Arabica Fruit Extract, Hyaluronic Acid, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Retinol, PEI-10, Hydrated Silica, Sodium Chloride, Fructan, Maltodextrin, Spirulina Maxima Extract, Curcumin, Potassium Chloride, Potassium Phosphate, Butylene Glycol, Sodium Phosphate, Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate, Maltooligosyl Glucoside, Arginine, Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Sodium Dilauramidoglutamide Lysine, Sodium Hydroxide, Citric Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Carthamus Tinctorius Seed Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Extract, PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate, Polyisobutene, PVP, C13-15 Alkane, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Sodium Hydroxypropylsulfonate Laurylglucoside Crosspolymer, Parfum, Hexylene Glycol, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Phenoxyethanol.

The packaging is a lovely, but poorly chosen glass pot. I say poorly chosen because if a cream contains light and air sensitive ingredients (like retinol), then an opaque squirt tube would be more appropriate and keep the formula stable for longer. It contains only 15 ml, which is pretty standard for a full size eye cream, but eye creams are small in general. It is quite expensive: 47,20€. I’m not sure I would repurchase because my skin isn’t this product’s target and it’s a bit too occlusive for me, but if you have naturally dry skin and always found it difficult to incorporate retinol into your routine, this is a great way to do it.

If I’m totally honest, I always thought Glow Recipe was a bit overrated and kind of gimmicky – but this product has its place and for what it’s meant to do, it’s well formulated. This is a winner.

  1. I have been using this product for a few years now and I absolutely love it.
My skin especially eyelids are super sensitive and I have never had any reaction what so ever. I use it morning and night just a lovely gentle smooth product.
A little pricey for me now that I’m retired, however I will go without something else to purchase it.
