The Maskerade Ball | 5 Quick Reviews of… Sheet Masks!

Being a beauty box subscriber and a GWP enthusiast, I end up with a lot of masks. Mini masks, full size masks, sample masks, sheet masks. And sometimes I struggle to find enough to say to dedicate a full post to a singular mask. So it makes sense to me to group 5 masks of the same type for a quick round of short reviews.

The theme today are hydrating, calming face sheet masks, from 5 different brands.

Beauty Pro Rose Infused Sheet Mask

Review: This is a fabric sheet mask (made of biodegradable bamboo and plastic free, and indicated in the packaging) that you leave on for 15 minutes. Main ingredient is rose water, and I’m not sure I’m a fan of it because the verdict it still out about if it’s a good ingredient or not – it contains some antioxidants and microbial properties, but it is a fragrant with irritating potential. It also contains some algae extracts (Undaria Pinnatifida, Sargassum Fulvellum, Laminaria Japonica) and rosemary and chamomile extracts, all of them good, skin soothing antioxidants. But that lavender oil though… why? Why did they have to ruin a skin soothing mask with a huge skin disrupter?? Lavender may calm you if you smell, not if you apply it topically. It’s a well known, well researched skin sensitizer.

Personally I felt no difference with this face mask. It didn’t cause a reaction, but I also didn’t notice any improvement. I’ll give it some points for their environment conscious approach.

Made in Korea, £4.95 per mask.

Beauty Pro Rose Infused Sheet Mask Ingredients: Rosa Damascena Flower Water, Glycerin, Pentylene Glycol, Carrageenan, Undaria Pinnatifida Extract, Sargassum Fulvellum Extract, Laminaria Japonica Extract, Sargassum Fusiforme Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Decyl Glucoside, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Rosa Canina Fruit Extract, Linalool.

Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Calming Mask

Review: This is a fabric mask with a green tint that you leave on fro 10 to 20 min. This mask has a huge ingredient list, and niacinamide is the 4th one, which is spectacular (niacinamide targets a multitude of skin concerns and it’s a trustworthy ingredient for any skin type). There are a lot of good, soothing, hydrating and skin-identical ingredients in this, too many to list here. But just like the previous mask, they chose to include irritating, perfuming ingredients, like the damn lavender oil, and just plain old perfume (parfum), which is in a higher concentration than hyaluronic acid (Sodium Hyaluronate). This is so counter productive. The thing is, the other ingredients are so good that their effect wasn’t completely wiped out by the fragrance and I’ve actually felt a difference on my skin.

The mask itself was very cooling and I expected some reactive redness after wearing it, but there was none. My skin felt smooth, hydrated and most of all, soothed. I had such a good experience with this that I’ll look into the full Cicapair line. Let’s hope there’s some fragrance-free products in there.

Made in Korea, 6,50€ per mask.

Biotherm Aqua Pure Flash Mask (hydration and purity)

Review: So, this one is also a fabric mask that claims to have “Life Plankton Water” and salicylic acid, and that you’re supposed to leave on for 15 minutes. I could care less about the “plankton” claim – it’s still water people, it’s as innocuous as water can be. Honestly, I’m not super impressed with this mask, but I’ll give it credit that it does what it claims. The ingredients list is simple and focuses a lot on hydration. There’s a small amount of salicylic acid, not enough for me to notice a difference on the few spots on my face, but understandably so since this mask is marketed to sensitive skin types, so it’s expected that active ingredients are at a low concentration. The only nasty ingredient is parfum, but it’s at the very bottom of the ingredient list, so concentration is minimal and I’m not too bothered by it.

I didn’t feel that much of a difference on my skin after using this mask. More hydrated, sure, but I can get the same effect with a hyaluronic acid serum and a good moisturiser. For a mask, I expect more, because face masks are super expensive per use. And this is more expensive than an Inkey List hyaluronic acid serum.

Biotherm Aqua Pure Flash Mask Ingredients: Aqua, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, PVM/MA Copolymer, Glyceryl Acrylate/Acrylic Acid Copolymer, Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Polyacrylate, Sodium Polyacrylate Starch, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Hydroxyacetophenone, Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside, Vitreoscilla Ferment, Xanthan Gum, Salicylic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum (F.I.L. By Terry Baume de Rose Hydrating Rose Mask

Review: This is a hydrogel mask, lightly pink toned and with what looks like small petals infused in the gel. It’s divided into two sections, for the top and bottom half of the face. I like this separation because it makes it easier to adjust to every face shape. It’s supposed to be on the face for 20 minutes. The smell of rose is there, but it’s not overpowering, although the rose flower oil and the parfum are the worst ingredients in this mask, being irritating perfuming components and all. This does contains Centella Asiatica and Chamomilla Recutita extracts, that are soothing and antioxidant ingredients.

Ugh… I never win, do I? These masks keep wasting their nice ingredients by adding perfume. Which is a shame because I enjoyed using this mask – I felt my skin was hydrated and a bit brighter the morning after using it. I don’t think the ingredients list is special enough overall, and certainly not worth the price.

111Skin Sub-Zero De-Puffing Energy Facial Mask

Review: This is a hydrogel face sheet mask that comes in two sections, just like the previous mask. Must be how boujee brands do it, because these masks are crazy expensive for a one time use product. This mask in particular is periwinkle blue and smells like blueberry gummies. Despite the scent, parfum is one of the last ingredients on the list, just above the colorants – the scent is probably due to the Raspberry Ketone, that I’m not sure if it’s an irritant or not. It also contains caffeine, which is another ingredient that the verdict is still out on: it has antioxidant and soothing properties, but it can be irritant as well. On the plus side, it does have hyaluronic acid, good for hydration, and allantoin, which is a great soothing ingredient, and most impressive of all – peptides! Nice to see peptides in a sheet mask.

This formula does contain some good skin soothing ingredients and some antioxidants, and I had a nice experience using this – my skin was very hydrated and plump after the 20 minutes you’re supposed to wear it. I liked it, but the price is outrageous.

  1. I’m not very fond of sheet masks. When I need to address a specific skin concern I prefer to use a skincare booster. Sheet masks tend to provide very short-lived results on my skin and as you well pointed out, they are very expensive considering they only provide a single use. However, they might come in handy when skin is very distressed and needs an effective quick fix. Thank you for your review, the Dr. Jart + mask seems to be a great option to calm and soothe skin.

    1. The good thing about sheet masks for me is that I get to try different brands in a quick and easy way – that’s what happened with Dr. Jart+ Cicapair line, I have another product from that line and love it. I never actually buy sheet masks (not the most ecological product, IMO) but I receive so many in GWP/skincare kits/beauty subscriptions that seemed like a waste not to review them!
